Topics
Topics serve two purposes in Symphonie. One is to allow recipients
to unsubscribe from a distribution, while optionally remaining subscribed to other topics.
They also serve a location for some defaults for new Mailings and Documents.
If you maintain different named distributions that recipients can choose to subscribe to,
each of these will be a Topic in Symphonie. The system is installed with a default
topic, and there must be at least one Topic in the system at all times. Whenever any email is sent
through Symphonie, an unsubscribe topic must be assigned so that any unsubscribes
that are recieved can be properly recorded, and so the unsubscribe recipients can be
filtered out before the email is sent.
Do not use topics to define the audience for a Mailing. By this we mean do not create a
topic and mark some recipients as subscribed simply as a mechanism to target those recipients.
If recipients unsubscribe, they will only be unsubscribed from that topic, and will likely
continue to get email from your other topics, which may make them feel like you are not
honoring their request to unsubscribe. To pick recipients to target, add them directly to
the mailing or create a segment to hold the recipients.
Topics include fields used for a new Mailing or Document. If you set the Reply-To in the
Topic settings, for example, it will be the default value for any new mailings you create.
New Topics with unspecified fields will default to the global settings values.
Once a Topic has been used for a Mailing or Document sending, it cannot be deleted since it
now has unsubscribes associated with it. Topics that have not been used for sending can
be deleted.
